WILTON — Hear the words “wicks end” and it probably conjures an image of a candle about to burn out, plunging someplace into darkness.
When those words are applied to a white colonial house with black shutters at the top of a hill in the Cannondale section of town, the reverse is true. This house is illuminated by natural light and because of its placement high atop the hill at 39 Wicks End Lane it also enjoys stunning views and spectacular sunsets. This sun-filled home has amazing views in all four seasons. It has spacious elegant formal rooms and casual spaces.
The stunning grounds are punctuated with beautiful landscaping, a privacy screen of tall trees in the backyard, a bluestone patio, gazebo, and a Gunite heated in-ground swimming pool, spa and waterfall. All of those exterior amenities and many more features inside heighten this home’s entertainment value, and yet, as one of the owners put it, “This is a real family home.”
Stone pillars topped with lanterns mark the entrance to this attractive level and sloping property of just over two acres and its 5,862-square-foot house, which was built in 1987.
It was obviously updated because it looks and feels and lives more like new construction. A long driveway lined in Belgium block climbs to the top of the hill, where a bluestone path leads to a dramatic two-story covered front entrance with four tall columns. This front façade was changed by the current owners to make its appearance more timeless without sacrificing its classic beauty.
French doors framed by sidelights and dentil molding open to the two-story marble foyer. Step down into the spacious front-to-back formal living room, which has a marble gas fireplace with a decorative mantel, built-in shelving, and egg and dart crown molding. A door on the back wall opens to a small bluestone patio with stone sitting wall. From the living room take two steps up to the wood paneled office. It has a marble wood-burning fireplace, vaulted ceiling, parquet floor and custom built-in bookshelves. French doors close off the living room for privacy.
From the other side of the living room step up to the family room. Its features include a red brick fireplace flanked by built-in bookshelves and cabinetry, a cathedral and beamed ceiling, and wainscoting on the lower walls.
There is a door to the small patio and on the opposite wall another door opens onto a larger bluestone patio and the pool. On the back wall there is a large wet bar with a sink, marble counter, cabinetry and a beverage refrigerator.
Continuing the amazing entertainment flow, the family room is open to the well-planned gourmet kitchen. This highly functional space has a long center island with a breakfast bar that accommodates six comfortably, Carrera marble counters and a greenhouse-like wall of glass and casement windows by the long stainless sink. High-end appliances include a Wolf six-burner range, Wolf double ovens, LG refrigerator and Bosch dishwasher. The perimeter and island counters have an ogee edge.
Open to the kitchen is the large breakfast room that has walls of nearly floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors to a wood deck, the patio and pool area. The formal dining room features wainscoting on the lower walls and dentil crown molding. On the other side of the breakfast room there is a wing with a laundry room, full bath and another room that could be a secondary office or a guest bedroom.
Above the three-car attached garage is a large bonus room with wall-to-wall carpeting, a media area and a billiard or game area. Pine wood paneling covers the lower walls and there are built-ins.
On the second floor, the master suite has a gas-fueled marble fireplace, and the master bath has a double vanity, built-in make-up table, deep jetted tub, shower and bidet. Three other bedrooms share a hall bath on this floor. One of them has a vaulted ceiling and a reading alcove with built-in bookshelves on two walls.
The finished third floor has another bedroom, although this space really has flexible use. One wall has a long built-in window seat. There is also a full bath.
The lower level is cavernous and has lots of storage, as well as a wine cellar and tasting room, and an exercise room. While this basement has interior access, there is also a separate service entrance for maintenance workers.
Although the house sits in a private setting it’s only a five-minute ride to town, shopping, schools and the train.
